Top Performing Mutual Fund of July 2011

Our highest scoring mutual fund for the month of July 201a was, for the first time in over a year, NOT iShares Silver. It is in fact a Fidelity Fund:

  • Fidelity Select Chemicals – b shares (Stock symbol: FSCHX)

These guys at Fidelity sure are smart, aren’t they? I guess when you have that many people managing that many different “high risk” funds, you can’t help but get a few winners every month. Of course, along with the one or two winners, you also get a whole bunch of dogs…which Fidelity also has in spades.

Select Chemicals did well because the underlying stocks have been dogs for a long time. And as they say, “every dog has its day.” Sooner or later these dogs had to come up. I don’t want to take anything away from the fund management – they did indeed do a superb job of picking stocks for this fund.

Anyway, I digress. Let’s continue with the details:
Rank last month – 10th
1 month return – (1.3)%
3 month return – 3.0%
6 month return – 12.3%
12 month return – 66.1% !!!!!

Be sure to read our last post to get the details on how we rate these funds. Happy investing.
